Navigating the Preschool, Elementary & High School Admissions Process

Expert Private School Guidance

with Carolyn White

MAKING CHOICES

Choosing the right school for your child is one of the most important decisions you can make. Whether you are applying to preschool, elementary, middle or upper school, determining which school will best suit your child and your family’s values requires careful thought and reflection.  Moreover, every school has its own personality and admissions protocol, which takes time and energy to sort out.  With strong support, the process of finding a school can be one of the most exciting and enriching experiences you and your child will ever have.

ADMISSIONS

While Assistant Director of Admissions at Crossroads School in Santa Monica for sixteen years  (1998-2014), Carolyn interviewed and counseled thousands of parents and students applying for Kindergarten through 12th grade. Her primary goal has always been to find the appropriate match between school and family.  Integrity and compassion have consistently guided her interactions with students, parents and admissions directors, who highly value Carolyn’s professional opinion.

Carolyn came to admissions with over ten years of teaching experience (grades 7-12), so she understands how teachers think and how students relate to a school setting. She is also a parent who has seen her daughter through private school admissions at every level.  Carolyn understands the importance of the right placement as does her (now-adult) daughter, with whom she works.

Whether you are applying to preschool, elementary, middle or upper school, determining which educational experience will best suit your child’s needs and your family’s values can be daunting.  Everyone has an opinion (to say nothing of what is on the internet), so it’s hard to avoid the “buzz and misinformation” about school admissions processes. They are complex and particular to each school but not meant to intentionally confuse you.  Carolyn’s expertise gives you the advantage of having the best guidance available to find the school with the curriculum and culture that makes the most sense for your child.

As the author of The Seven Common Sins of Parenting an Only Child (Jossey Bass/John Wiley), Carolyn has advised parents and educators throughout the country.

THE JOURNEY

You may begin the admissions journey unsure of how your child learns best, your educational philosophy, or what your family wants from a school community. Carolyn takes the time to know all of you and filters out the “buzz” and often-unreliable information you may have heard about schools. After the first consultations, you will feel confident that you will have all the support you need to successfully complete the placement process.  From first conversations about which schools are of interest, to filling out applications and preparing for interviews, Carolyn will be your most reliable resource.

RELOCATION AND LAST MINUTE PLACEMENT

Relocating your family to another city is, to say the least, a Herculean task. Even when you have what you think is accurate information from family, friends, your real estate broker, or Google, you can be misled.

You may purchase or lease a home thinking it’s in a good public school district only to find out at the last minute that isn’t the case. Panic can ensue and you may have to look for a private school at the last minute. Knowing which private (independent) school will be a fit for your child and family when you have never lived in an area is very difficult.

Carolyn smoothes the way. If you are relocating to Los Angeles or need to find a school at the last minute, she makes it happen and has helped families moving from many countries and throughout the United States to find the best school placement. Some excellent schools take late applications and others keep a few spots open specifically for families transitioning into the area. Carolyn knows those schools and their admission directors. She also understands where to settle to access the best public schools and how to apply to charter and magnet schools as well.

You will not be alone in this big life change.
